1989/02/16 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES February 16 , 1989 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 3 :00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall , 6750 Commerce Boulevard , Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding. Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 3 : 10 p.m. and led the pledge of allegiance. Present: ( 5) Commissioners Kennedy, Jennis, Lyons, Jurgiel and Chairman Chase . Absent: ( 0) None. Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau and the secretary. Kennedy Arrives At approximately 3 : 11 , Commissioner Kennedy joined the meeting. Approval of Minutes Upon a motion by Commissioner Jennis and seconded by Commissioner Jurgiel with all in favor, the Minutes of January 19 , 1988 were approved as submitted. Announcements by Chairman Chairman Chase read a letter that he wrote to Senator Pete Wilson and Congressman Doug Bosco regarding catastrophic health care. He stated that seniors are just now becoming aware of the bill and its ramifications. According to Mr. Chase, seniors' taxes could increase by 30 percent. Commissioner Jennis Commissioner Jennis added that Mr. Carl Kim will be speaking at Fun-After-Fifty on catastrophic health care . In addition, there will be a speaker from the Blue Cross regarding the same at 2 p.m. on March 7th at the Community Center. Chairman Chase indicated he would only be in favor of the plan if it included nursing home care. Disaster Preparedness Chairman Chase stated the Commission should make an effort to have the City Council reach all the citizens of Rohnert Park in regards to disaster preparedness . Commissioner Jennis indicated that individuals have to 411 be responsible for themselves and help their neighbors. It was Ms. Jennis' opinion that the City Council can do little in this area. Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Minutes -2- February 16 , 1989 111 Sr. Scheduler Wendy Brazeau Ms. Brazeau was recognized and spoke on the above. She stated that Public Safety Officer Bill Martin is going through training and will train others. She has a list of senior volunteers to be trained. They will learn first aide and CPR. Discussion followed. "What If" Column in SCAN Newsletter Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau stated she could use some help in writing the "What If" column for the SCAN newsletter. Chairman Chase volunteered to help her. Discussion followed. Commissioner Jurgiel Commissioner Jurgiel was recognized and inquired which buildings within the City would be used during a disaster to shelter and help the public. Commissioner Jennis commented that she would have copies ready at the next regular meeting to answer these pertinent questions . 0 Unscheduled Public Appearances Ms. Minnie Lynd, 270 Allan Avenue, was recognized and commented that the catastrophic health care bill would affect people on Social Security and people with Medicare. Regarding disaster preparedness, she commented that one will not be able to dial 911 in a public emergency. Therefore, she recommended that people learn first aide and CPR to help one another instead of having to wait for help. Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau Ms . Brazeau informed the Commission that there was a Senior Valentine's Dance at the Community Center with over 75 people in attendance and that on April 4 , there will be a Spring Tea Dance. In addition, La Fiesta School wants senior volunteers to help at the school in kindergarden through sixth grade by being teachers' aides and working with the kids. This information will be printed in SCAN. Northbay Savings and Loan will help seniors fill out their tax forms for free on Wednesdays from 9 : 00 a .m. 411 to 3 : 30 p.m. Codding Center Since Recreation Supervisor Mary Hanlon was unable to attend the meeting, Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau answered questions regarding the Codding Center. from Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes -3- February 16 , 1989 the Commission. Commissioner Jennis inquired about the agenda, and Ms. Brazeau responded that the next meeting will probably be a group meeting and that the Minutes and Agenda will be mailed out shortly to the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission. Millie Hamill Millie Hamill of the Cultural Arts Commission stated that Mr. Michael Grice will be the Theatre Manager and he will be starting March 1 . Apparently he is interested in meeting with seniors who wish to volunteer as ushers, etc. at the new theatre when it is completed. Chairman Chase suggested putting this information in the SCAN newsletter. Matters from Commissioners Chairman Chase indicated that he thought the Commission had done some good things over the past year, but that it needs to set new goals and objectives for 1989 and he would like input from the seniors in the community. Commissioner Jennis indicated that a program for residential care should be a goal of the Commission. Senior Drop-In Center Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau commented that there were 2 , 139 visitors in January with a daily average of 79 visitors and 12 new visitors . ill Meeting Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one further desiring to be heard, Commissioner Lyons made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Jennis to adjourn the meeting of the Rohnert Park Senior Citizens Advisory Commission at approximately 3 : 50 p.m. —Chairman ATTEST: '1-7)L; C-P_./ULA/L k.► ecretary 0
