1989/05/18 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES May 18, 1989. The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall , 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding. Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 3:02 p.m. and led the pledge of allegiance. Present: (5) Commissioners Kennedy, Lyons, Jennis, Jurgiel and Chairman Chase. Absent: (0) None. Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Secretaries Judy Hauff and Theresa Smith. Approval of Minutes Upon a motion by Commissioner Jennis, seconded by Commissioner Kennedy with all present in favor, the Minutes of March 16, 1989 were approved as submitted. Announcements by Chairman Chairman Chase read correspondence regarding a plaque in the Community Center, a letter to Governor Deukmejian regarding food programs for the elderly and a reply from Congressman Don Bosco regarding Medicare and the Catastrophic Health Initiative, copies of which is attached to the original of these Minutes. Commissioner Jennis added that Mr. Sheets is the contact person along with Senator Benston of the Finance Committee in the State Legislature should seniors wish to make their opinions known. In conclusion, Chairman Chase commented that he felt the method of financing by a 15% sur-tax was misguided. Residential Care - Commissioner Jennis Commissioner Jennis stated that she had been in touch with Marge Ling of the Residential Care Council of Sonoma County. Ms . Jennis read statistics on the estimated number of low income families and elderly in the County. She wants to be involved in collecting data. Commissioner Jennis explained the definition of frail and elderly and read Ms. Ling's resume . She would like to supply the Committee at the Residential Care Council of the County of Sonoma with a list of those who would benefit from this program in Rohnert Park. Commissioner .Jennis explained that each Committee meets by itself before they have one general meeting. In addition, she emphasized that care for frail and elderly seniors was of importance to the late Commissioner Daisy Dolby. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes -2- May 18, 1989 . Pet Meals on Wheels Commissioner Lyons indicated that he was against the Pet Meals on Wheels program and thought it was a waste of time. Commissioner Kennedy disagreed and Commissioners Jennis and Jurgiel commented that perhaps a large pet food company or grocery store would be willing to donate food to such a program. Commissioner Lyons responded that his last experience with having a super market donate items was with Raley's and that their donation was an insult, Commissioner Jennis stated that it was important to let the seniors know frankly that it was dangerous to their health to give their own meals to their pets. General Plan Review Committee The General Plan Review Committee is on hold at the present time according to Commissioner Jennis. Paratransit Issue Commissioner Kennedy stated that she has been unable to obtain further details on this Committee from Anne Daniels, who was referred by City Engineer Roland Brust. Organ at Burton Avenue Rec. Commissioner Jennis commented that the wheels on the donated organ at Burton Avenue are still broken so it is very • difficult to move . Founder's Day Parade Commissioner Lenore Jurgiel commented on the poor organization of the last Founder's Day Parade. She stated that there should be a float with seniors on it , and Commissioner Jennis responded that the Kitchen Cut Ups have won five awards in past years for their floats. The main problem is that the organizing committee needs more volunteers. Meeting Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one further desiring to be heard, Commissioner Lyons made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Jennis to adjourn the meeting of the Rohnert Park Senior Citizens Advisory Commission at approximately 3:45 p.m. Chairman ATTEST: Lf r} IgarDiv� Secretary
