1989/07/20 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES July 20, 1989 • The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park, with Commissioner Kennedy presiding. Call to Order Commissioner Kennedy called the regular session to order at approximately 2:59 p.m. and led the pledge of allegiance. Present: (3) Commissioners Kennedy, Lyons, and Jennis Absent: (2) Commissioners Jurgiel and Chairman Chase Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Caroline Fabio and Secretary, Lillian Brooks Approval of Minutes Upon a motion by Commissioner Jennis, seconded by Commissioner Lyons, with all present in favor, the Minutes of May 18, 1989, were approved as submitted. Introduction of Carl Leivo Commissioner Kennedy recognized Caroline Fabio at which time she introduced the recently hired Assistant to the City Manager Carl Leivo. Mr. Leivo reviewed for the Commission his background and what his duties will entail with the City of Rohnert Park. Pet Meals on Wheels Commissioner Kennedy acknowledged Elaine Sichel , Program Coordinator, Marine Humane Society. Ms. Sichel elaborated in detail how the program works and the best way to get the program started. She felt that the most important qualities for a well- run program is patience and consistency. Stores will ask alot of questions and will be very particular about where the donation box is kept. Consistency is important because the program won't work if you can't rely on volunteers. Discussion followed. Update on Codding Center Mary Hanlon, Recreation Supervisor, was recognized by Commissioner Kennedy. Ms. Hanlon advised that there was nothing further to report concerning the Codding Center. She stated that plans are to use the existing building as is. The Senior Craft shop has closed down and will not reopen until completion of construction. The possibility of having senior volunteer help was discussed. Senior Drop In Center Commissioner Jennis informed the Commission that the daily average attendance for the Drop-in-Center for the Month of May is approximately 83 individuals. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes -2- July 20, 1989 Cable TV Carl Kim was recognized by the Commission. He briefly discussed • the communication he received from Congressman Bosco concerning quality and price of cable television service. Are You OK? Commissioner Kennedy presented before the Commission communications relating to the program called "Are You OK?". This is a service for residents within their city who desire a daily telephone check which will ask "ARE YOU OK?" . Police or Fire Department personnel will check on the welfare of individuals who fail to answer a call . Copy of correspondence is attached to the original of these minutes. Plaque for Peter McCormick Caroline Fabio displayed to the Commission the plaque that was prepared in memory of Peter McCormick and his successful efforts in establishing the Senior Center. This plaque will ultimately be displayed in a prominent place in the new Codding Center Building. Unscheduled Public Appearances Evelyn Alexander was recognized by Commissioner Kennedy. She expressed her discontent with the staff and the scheduling for senior citizen activities. She advised that the "SCAN" , in her opinion, is not very informative and feels something more should be done. Discussion followed. • Carl Leivo, new Assistant to the City Manager, was recognized by the Commissioner and stated that he and Mary Hanlon, Recreation Supervisor, would meet with Ms. Alexander after the meeting to address her concerns. Meeting Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one further desiring to be heard, Commissioner Lyons made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Jennis to adjourn the meeting of the Rohnert Park Senior Citizens Advisory Commission at approximately 3:48 p.m. Chairman ATTEST: Secretary
