1989/09/21 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES September 21, 1989 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall , 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding. Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 2:59 p.m. and led the pledge of allegiance. Present: (5) Commissioners Kennedy, Lyons, Jennis , Jurgiel and Chairman Chase Absent: (0) Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Carl Leivo, Assistant to the City Manager and Secretary, Lillian Brooks Approval of Minutes Upon a motion by Commissioner Kennedy, seconded by Commissioner Jennis, with all present in favor, the Minutes of May 18, 1989, were approved as submitted. Announcements by Chairman None. Unscheduled 410 Public Appearances None. Topics for Discussion Update on Codding Center Carl Leivo was acknowledged by Chairman Chase. Mr. Leivo extended the apology of Council Member Spiro for being absent but informed the Board that Ms. Spiro was called away on other City business . Mr. Leivo reviewed for the Board that last spring the Task Force and a few others put together a list of needs that were necessary at the Codding Center. Mr. Leivo elaborated on these plans stressing the confinements that exist . There are conflicts within our goals, our needs and the directions we want to go and therefore, compromises need to be made. Mr. Leivo continued to discuss the design of the Center. He requested that the Seniors be objective in looking over the plans, to bear in mind that this center is for the community in general , but that the Seniors have priority. In looking at the plans it was pointed out that there are spaces within the Codding Center that are leased to outside concerns. Mr. Leivo advised that as these leased spaces become available, the City will be able to acquire that area for additional usage. Mr. Leivo stressed that the purpose of this particular meeting was to bring the Board up to date on the "design phase" of the Center, and is seeking insight and input from the audience. If approved, the City can then start on the construction drawing of the Center. Mr. Leivo Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes -2- September 21 , 1989 introduced Tom Whitson who then elaborated more on the design of the Codding Center. Mr. Whitson felt that the Center would be opened by next spring at the earliest. Mr. Leivo also advised the Board that monies received from the grant cannot be used towards the youth center area of the building. Hazel Brubaker, Senior Nutrician Site Coordinator, was recognized by Chairman Chase. Ms. Brubaker expressed her dissapointment with the nutritian facilities. She felt the size was not adequate and that serving the seniors under this design will be difficult. Commissioner Lyons leaves Commissioner Lyons left the meeting at approximtely 3:55 p.m. Discussion continued. Commissioner Lyons returns Commissioner Lyons returned at approximately 3:58 p.m. Jim Pekkain, Director of Recreation, presented the possibility of having dinner shifts. Discussion followed. Are You OK? Program The Are You OK? program was introduced and the question of what is being done was asked. Mr. Leivo informed the Board that this particular program was going to be discussed at the next City Council Meeting which was to be held on Tuesday, September 26. Communications None. Matters from Commissioners Wendy Brazeau was acknowledged by Chairman Chase. Ms. Brazeau reported that there had been 2140 visitors total at the Center with an average daily attendance of 79. There were approximately 910 SCAN flyers mailed which informed the Seniors of upcoming events. Mary Hanlon was recognized by the Board. Ms . Hanlon reported that the City of Rohnert Park has been selected as one of three possible sites that had applied for a grant to receive a free computer to keep statistics on all seniors.
