SENIOR CITIZEN'S ADVISORY COMMISSION
MINUTES
Thursday, March 18, 2010
The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m.
Roll Call Present: Ackerman, Deza, Hawker, Sampson
Absent: 0 (1 vacant seat)
Also present: Dan Schwarz, Interim City Manager, Pam Stafford, Mayor,

Election of Officers
Chairman Ackerman nominated Commissioner Sampson for Chairman, seconded
by Commissioner Hawker and unanimously approved. Commissioner Sampson
nominated Commissioner Hawker for Vice Chairman, seconded by Commissioner
Ackerman and unanimously approved.
Presentation by City Staff Regarding the Future Sales Tax Measure
Interim City Manager Dan Schwarz informed the Commissioners and the audience
on the 1/2cent sales tax Measure E, which will appear on the June 2010 election
ballot. He indicated this Measure would generate $2.5 million for the City. After
describing the reasons for and importance of this Measure, a Q&A session
followed.
Commissioner Deza commented on the new medical marijuana dispensary in
Cotati and suggested Rohnert Park should have one.
Discussion on powers and duties of the Senior Advisory Commission
Manager Miller reported he looked up the original resolution setting up the
Committee and distributed to the Commissioners one page of that resolution which
itemized its functions. Commissioner Dega's suggestion that the Advisory
Commission should cover Sonoma County , not just Rohnert Park, was not acted
on. Manager Miller explained that City Commissions are just for that particular
City.
Introduction of Senior Club Membership
Jessica Schieberl reported on the proposed senior club membership program.
Membership is voluntary; each member will pay $20 a year, which would include
the Center's newsletter , the SCAN, discounts on the Center's trips and discounts
at local participating Rohnert Park businesses. This program will begin in April
and end December 31, 2010 at the $20 fee. 2011 will be $20 for the entire year.
She indicated this program was open to all ages.
City Council Liaison Report
Mayor Stafford reported that the City was in the process of hiring a City Manager,
and still dealing with budget cuts, etc. She was impressed with the many
volunteers stepping up to offer their services to help in any way they can.
Parks & Recreation Commission Liaison Report
In the absence of Commissioner Hotaling, Guy Miller reported the Parks &
Recreation Department was planning (1) a farmers' market sometime in June on a
Friday evening from 5:00 to7:00p.m. in the Plaza area behind the library and (2)
KRCB will play music in the Civic Center Plaza, along with the Farmers' Market.
Technical Advisor Report
Jessica reported our annual Holiday Party had over 150 people in attendance. The
raffle raised over $300 for the Center. The SweetPea Gift Shoppe sold $3,634 in
December. Over 102 people attended our January 16 pancake breakfast provided
by POA. That brought in $485 for the Center. 13 seniors attended the King Tut
exhibit in San Francisco, paying $30 each. After viewing results of the Center's
survey, it appeared more exercise classes were requested. Jessica has set up two
additional classes through the SRJC program: Active Fitness which started
February 18 and Tai Chi starting February 22nd. In February, the SRJC Low Impact
Exercise class had 40 seniors in attendance. The Center collected $577 from our
Musical Extravaganza with 109 people in attendance. The February Free AARP
tax program brought in $917.25 in donation money for the Senior Center.
The attendance at the Senior Center has increased in all areas.
Manager Miller, reported that the Senior Center 's year to date (February) revenue
was $36,911 with total expenses of$64,814, showing a net loss of only $27,903
compared to a net loss of$103,591 in 2009.

Matters from Commissioners
Chairman Ackerman announced the next meeting of the Commission would be
held on May 20111, 2010.

There being no further business of the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at
2:20 p.m.
