SENIOR CITIZEN'S ADVISORY COMMISSION
MINUTES
Thursday, May 20, 2010
Call to Order Chairman Sampson called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. and
led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Roll Call Present: Ackerman, Deza, Hawker, Sampson. Also present: Joe
Callinan, City Council Liaison; Guy Miller, Recreation Services Manager; Jessica
Schieberl, Technical Director; Betty Tringali, Senior Center Staff.
Approval of Minutes The minutes of the March 18, 2010 meeting were approved
as submitted.
Posting of the Agenda Recreation Staff acknowledged that the agenda was
• posted as required by law in three public locations.
Technical Advisor Report Jessica Schieberl reported every Saturday in May and
all of June was booked with events. Our kitchen was repainted by volunteers from
Rebuilding Rohnert Park and our Public Works Dept. Our day trips have been
very successful. As of today, we have 103 members signed up for our Senior
Club. Upcoming events in June are our choir concert on June 12 and our Musical
Extravaganza on June 26.
Activities Reports:
Senior Meals Programs — In Pam Schaeffer's absence, Jessica reported from
January through March, the dining room served 1,114 meals and delivered 4,466
meals. In June, the COA is working with Redwood Empire Food Bank to provide
meals to children (about 20 or 30) and seniors every Friday in the Center and after
lunch, provide an activity for the children until about 2:00 pm. There will be
teenagers and parents there to help out. This replaces a Summer School program
which was cut due to lack of funds.
SweetPea Gift Shoppe — In Shelley Melville's absence, Jessica reported the sales
for January through May 19th totaled $5,165.82. They had 15 new participants;
added two new display cases and are open the 2"d Saturday of each month.
Income Tax Services— In Rosalind Marino's absence, Jessica reported the Center
received $4,000 in donations from this tax service.
. Parks & Recreation Commission Laision Report— No report.
City Council Liaison Report—Joe Callinan reported they were hiring a new City
Manager and have hired an interim City Manager—John Dunn — for a six-month
period. It was noted that he was not interested in becoming permanent City
Manager. There was a brief discussion on Measure E.
Recreation Services Manager Report—Council member Belforte has not yet
appointed a new commissioner. It remains at 4 members. We are working in
partnership with Boys & Girls Club to hold a dance for 6th, 7th & 8th grades.
Partner with Public Safety Department on May 1st Running with the Pack— 5K 80
runners - $3200 for Special Olympics. The Community Center's reflection pond
which had been damaged in the LaPrieta earthquake and was drained about three
years ago, has been filled in and will be able to rent that space eventually. This
was done with a $30,000 grant. There is a business showcase today from 5 to
7p.m. The Farmers Market starts Friday, June 4 from 5-8 pm. 30 booths have
been sold. The Market will continue until Sept. 20. This is a Certified Market
with some organic products. There will be a child's carnival, SSU demonstrations,
Music — KRCB is arranging for music the whole month of July.
Communications— None
Matters from Commissioners Commissioner Hawker referred to the paper
• listing the Functions of this Commission. The gist of the discussion was that we
deal with questions or problems regarding seniors in Rohnert Park which are
brought to the attention of this Commission. This Commission is a conduit to the
City Council.
Other matters: Joe Tringali asked Guy Miller about the barbershop group
performing at the Farmer's Market. Guy agreed and said someone would be in
touch with him.
Chairman Sampson announced the next meeting of the Commission would be held
on September 16th, 2010.

There being no further business of the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at
2:10 p.m.
