1994/01/20 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes i CITY OF ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES January 20, 1994 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 1:00 p.m. at Codding Center,6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding. Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 1 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Present: (5) Commissioners Chase,Jennis,Jurgiel, Kennedy and Lyons Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Recreation Supervisor,Mary Hanlon; Program Specialist,Wendy Audiss; Senior Scheduler, Vicki Wilkerson; City Councilwoman,Linda Spiro; and City Manager,Joseph Netter. Approval of Minutes A motion to accept the minutes for the meeting of September 16th as written was made by Commissioner Jennis,seconded by Commissioner Jurgiel and unanimously approved. Acknowledging Posting of the Agenda Chairman Chase stated that the Secretary/Supervisor had posted the Agenda as required by law in three (3) public locations within the time period required. Unscheduled Public Appearances None Communications None Program Specialist Report Program Specialist,Wendy Audiss,updated the Senior Advisory Commission on the following activities: Christmas party and holiday lights tours, earthquake preparedness seminar,volunteer luncheon,fashion show, used clothing and bake sale,and reorganization of the Senior Center. Commissioner Lyons questioned the 50 hour minimum required for attendance at the volunteer luncheon. Program Specialist Audiss and Recreation Supervisor Hanlon explained the organization of the event and how the Senior Center has additional programs in place to honor volunteers. Attendance on all programs for November was 5,710 and for December was 5,177. Senior Scheduler Report Senior Scheduler, Vicki Wilkerson,reported the attendance of the January 11th tea dance at 102 with revenue of$207.55. The attendance at the January 16th dance was 269 with revenue of$587.08. Total revenue on dances to date for this fiscal year is $2,840.02. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes January 20, 1994 • City Council Update Councilwoman Spiro reported that the City Council had approved the renovations to the Community Outreach for Youth and Families(COYF) portion of the Senior Center building. Councilwoman Spiro has an item on the Council agenda to discuss having the Senior Center designated as an emergency shelter. Discussion followed regarding concerns for earthquake preparedness and items that are available for sale to make an individual emergency kit with water, food,etc. Commissioner Kennedy stated that it wasn't her alone who had questions regarding Linda's role as liaison and any potential conflict of interest in her roles as they pertain to the seniors and COYF. Councilwoman Spiro felt she did not have a conflict of interest and wanted to clear up any communication concerns with the Commission. Commissioner Jennis clarified the Commission's concerns. It was felt that the expansion requests had been brought up before the Commission and this information was not reaching the City Council. Lyons Leaves At 1:30 p.m., Commissioner Lyons left the meeting. Council Update- Continued Discussion followed on how best to keep the Council aware of senior issues. Kennedy Leaves At 1:32 p.m., Commissioner Kennedy left the meeting. Council Update- Continued City Manager Netter stated that on the Council agenda under "Matters from Council" would be the appropriate place to pacs along senior information to the Council. 111 Lyons Returns At 1:34 p.m.,Commissioner Lyons returned to the meeting. Council Update- Continued Discussion continued on how to make the public aware of all the work the seniors do to raise money for items for the Senior Center. A local columnist was in attendance who frequently covers senior events. Commissioner Jennis moved to approve Councilwoman Spiro as the Commission's continued liaison to the seniors. Commissioner seconded the motion. The Commission complimented the local newspaper on its coverage of senior events. Matters from Commissioners Chairman Chase discussed the importance of seniors having an identification card with their medical information on their persons in case of an emergency. Discussion followed regarding the various locations of this information within the Senior Center. Wish List Don Wallace asked whether or not Hazel Brubaker's wish list for the Senior Nutrition Program that had been published in the local newspaper had been updated. Ann Rooth Program Specialist Audiss updated the Commission on the status of Ann Rooth.
