SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES
September 15, 1994
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met
this date in regular session commencing at 1:00 p.m. at Codding Center, 6800
Hunter Drive, Suite A,Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding.
Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 1:00 p.m.
and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Roll Call Present: (4) Commissioners Chase,Jennis, Kennedy,and Lyons
Late: (1) Commissioner Jurgiel
Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Recreation Supervisor,Mary
Hanlon; Program Specialist,Wendy Audiss; Senior Scheduler, Vicki
Wilkerson; and City Councilwoman,Linda Spiro.
Approval of
Minutes A motion was made to accept the minutes for the meeting of July 21 with the
clarification by Councilwoman Spiro on page 2 regarding the previous
discussions on her absence. It was clarified and confirmed by Commissioner
Kennedy, seconded by Commissioner Jennis and unanimously approved.
Jurgiel Arrives Commissioner Jurgiel arrived at 1:02 p.m.
• Acknowledging
Posting of
the Agenda Chairman Chase stated that the Secretary/Supervisor had posted the Agenda
as required by law in three (3) public locations within the time period
required.
Unscheduled
Public
Appearances Supervisor Hanlon introduced Parks and Recreation Commissioner Elizabeth
Desmond and explained her role as information liaison between the Parks and
Recreation Commission and the Senior Advisory Commission.
Scheduled Public
Appearances Councilwoman Spiro clarified her absence at the last Senior Advisory
Commission meeting. She reviewed Evelyn Kim's letter regarding
recognition for Senior Scheduler Vicki Wilkerson's work and stated she took
the letter to the City Council. Discussion followed on Vicki's work
contributions.
Councilwoman Spiro will donate a flag to the nutrition site room for future
Senior Advisory Commission meetings.
Communications Chairman Chase read letters he had sent to Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey
regarding health care issues and the proposed health care plans. Discussion
followed on possibly conducting a survey of what questions and concerns
seniors may have.
Commissioner Kennedy made a motion requesting Chairman John Chase
write a letter inviting Federal representatives so speak at the Senior Center on
the proposed health care programs. Commissioner Jurgiel seconded and the
motion was unanimously approved.
Councilwoman Spiro also felt it was important to write a letter to State
representatives regarding health care concerns. Chairman Chase will contact
Jud Snyder at the Community Voice regarding the possibility of having a
health care column in the Voice.
Senior Scheduler Wilkerson asked Councilwoman Spiro if there could be a
senior representative on the City Council similar to the new youth
representative. Councilwoman expressed a concern that this might create the
potential then for all age groups to ask for representation. Councilwoman
Spiro will take this questions to the full Council. Program Specialist Audiss
mentioned that seniors can run for the City Council.
Discussion followed on concerns of apathy amongst the seniors,
Councilwoman Spiro pointed out that apathy is pervasive throughout all age
groups. Recreation Supervisor Hanlon reminded the Senior Advisory
Commission that by holding some Senior Advisory meetings,as previously
discussed,at the mobile home parks, we can perhaps reach more seniors.
Commissioner Jurgiel made a motion that the Commission hold the next
Senior Advisory Commission meeting at a mobile home park. Commissioner
Jennis seconded and the motion was unanimously approved.
Program
S Specialist
Report Program Specialist,Wendy Audiss,updated the Senior Advisory Commission
on the following items: Barbecue/Auction; Senior Center operating expense
cost recovery for 1992-93 fiscal year was 33% and in the 1993-94 fiscal year
this cost recovery increased to 45%; the September 28th Candidates' Social
with the Police Officers'Association;van entered in the Founder's Day
parade; fundraising committee meeting and thoughts behind the fees charged;
and the cruise party on September 23. This cruise party is in conjunction with
all the senior centers. She also presented updates on the Emergency
Operations Center vests that seniors will be making and an upcoming Senior
Center safety seminar. Discussion followed regarding the need for an
emergency service van in Rohnert Park in case one from a neighboring city
couldn't make it due to road problems.
Commissioner Kennedy made a motion that Chairman Chase write a letter to
the City Council regarding the van concern. Commissioner Jennis seconded
the motion which was unanimously approved.
August statistics: Senior Center attendance - 5,611, Sunshine Van passengers
- 196,fees collected- $7,470.30. Program Specialist Audiss also reported on
a pool tournament and that the table was being well used.

Scheduler
Report Senior Scheduler,Vicki Wilkerson,reported that at the August 9th tea dance
there were 100 in attendance and revenues were $182. At the September 13th
tea dance there were 100 in attendance with $130.75 in revenues. The next
dance is scheduled for September 25th with the Moonlighters playing. The

value of goods donated to the Baking Committee is $175. Everyone
acknowledged Ann Kennedy's volunteer hours on the Baking Committee.
Matters from
Commissioners Commissioner Jennis asked Councilwoman Spiro that if the Senior Center
reaches 50% cost recovery can it get a citation? Councilwoman said she will
follow up on the request.

Adjourned There being no further businPcs to discuss and no one further desiring to be
heard, Commissioner Jennis made a motion for adjournment at 2:12 p.m.
which was seconded by Commissioner Lyons.
