1994/11/17 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes • CITY OF ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES November 17, 1994 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 1:00 p.m. at Las Casitas Mobile Home Park,7545 Bridgit Drive,Rohnert Park, with Commissioner Kennedy presiding. Call to Order Commissioner Kennedy called the regular session to order at approximately 1:00 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Present: (3) Commissioners Jennis,Kennedy,and Lyons Late: (1) Commissioner Chase Absent: (1) Commissioner Jurgiel Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Recreation Supervisor,Mary Hanlon; Program Specialist,Wendy Audiss; Senior Scheduler,Vicki Wilkerson; City Councilwoman,Linda Spiro; and Park and Recreation Commissioner,Elizabeth Desmond. Commissioner Chase Arrives At approximately 1:01 p.m.,Commissioner Chase arrived and presided over the meeting. Approval of Minutes A motion was made to accept the minutes for the meeting of September 15 with the clarification by Commissioner Jennis on page 2 regarding the change in wording from citation to certificate of recognition. The change was so noted,and the motion to approve was made by Commissioner Lyons and unanimously approved. Flag Presentation Councilwoman Spiro presented the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission with her gift of an American flag to be kept in the Senior Center and used for Senior Advisory meetings. The Commission thanked Councilwoman Spiro and accepted the flag. Acknowledging Posting of the Agenda Chairman Chase stated that the Secretary/Supervisor had posted the Agenda as required by law in three (3)public locations within the time period required. Unscheduled Public Appearances None Scheduled Public Appearances None Communications Chairman Chase read a letter to the Senior Advisory Commission from Councilman Reilly regarding a mobile emergency medical vehicle for Rohnert Park. The letter stated it would be unlikely that the City would be able to purchase one due to budget constraints. Chairman Chase read a letter from Commander Shields regarding the same emergency vehicle. The letter outlined the locations of the four vehicles throughout the County. Councilwoman Spiro stated that she was committed to working on having a 24-hour medical facility in Rohnert Park. At the present time,the immediate care facility closes at 9 p.m. and all emergencies after that must go to neighboring cities. Discussion followed on other possible options towards improving the medical services in Rohnert Park. Chairman Chase read a letter from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey regarding health care issues and the status of a national health care program. Program Specialist Report Program Specialist,Wendy Audiss,updated the Senior Advisory Commission on October attendance, For programs it was 4,617 and for rentals was 1,397. October revenue for programs was $2,247.13 and for rentals was$747.25. There were 196 passengers on the Sunshine Bus,221 participants on the excursions,203 in the pool room,and the Drop-In Center had 2,444 visitors. Information on the following activities was presented: Hawaiian Islands cruise party,Christmas potluck on December 9,health faire on May 13,senior Thanksgiving dinner on November 22,clothing sale in January,and the fashion show in February. Senior Scheduler Report Senior Scheduler, Vicki Wilkerson,reported that September 25th tea dance had 213 in attendance and a profit of$480.42,and the October 11th tea dance had 113 in attendance and a profit of$166.98. Baking Committee donations for September were $37.73, for October$36.75,and as of November 17, $16.06 for November. Senior Center Statistics and Holiday Lights Recreation Supervisor Hanlon discussed a presentation to the City Council on statistics for the Senior Center. Councilwoman Spiro indicated she would put staff on the agenda for the January 24, 1995, City Council meeting. Recreation Supervisor Hanlon also announced that volunteers are needed to prepare holiday lights for the Expressway trees on November 30 at the Community Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Senior Center Baking Committee will be providing the goodies. The Holiday Lights Party will be on December 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Exchange Bank. Emergency Form Program Supervisor Audiss handed out an emergency form that has been designed for use in times of disaster to aid in location of Rohnert Park's seniors and for any other emergencies. Matters from Commissioners Chairman Chase discussed the Senior Advisory Commission's role as it relates to the seniors. Convalescent Hospital Councilwoman Spiro opened a discussion on whether or not seniors felt the need to have a convalescent hospital in Rohnert Park. Discussion followed on the quality of care in convalescent hospitals in general. It was suggested to Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes Page 2 November 17, 1994 talk to the children of the seniors in the community as they are the ones who may have more interest in there being a convalescent hospital in Rohnert Park. Meeting Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one further desiring to be heard,Commissioner Jennis made a motion for adjournment at 1:51 p.m. which was seconded by Commissioner Kennedy and unanimously approved.
