1995/07/20 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes 1110 CITY OF ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES July 20, 1995 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 1 p.m. at the Rohnert Park Senior Center, 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding. Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 1 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Present: (4) Commissioners Brubaker, Chase, Jurgiel, and Lyons Late: (1) Commissioner Kennedy Absent: (0) None Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Recreation Supervisor, Mary Hanlon; Program Specialist, Wendy Audiss; Senior Scheduler, Vicki Wilkerson; and City Councilwoman, Linda Spiro. Approval of Minutes A motion was made to accept the minutes for the meeting of May 18 was made by Commissioner Brubaker, seconded by Commissioner Lyons and unanimously approved. Acknowledging Posting of the Agenda Vice Chair Kennedy stated that the Secretary/Supervisor had posted the Agenda as required by law in three(3) public locations within the time period required. Unscheduled Public Appearances Robert Weinmann, 5763 Dexter Circle, Rohnert Park, discussed the Medicare and Social Security problems. He felt there was no problem with the Social Security funds despite news to the contrary and that the program was solvent through 2020. Commissioner Brubaker Leaves Commissioner Brubaker left the meeting at 1:05 p.m. Commissioner Brubaker Returns Commissioner Brubaker returned at 1:07 p.m. Unscheduled Public Appearances - cont. Mr. Weinmann also felt the stories of Medicare recipients possibly having to pay much more in the future are exaggerated. He felt that other changes will be made in the program so that seniors are not penalized. He handed a folder to each Commissioner with information regarding A.A.R.P. Commissioner Kennedy Arrives Commissioner Kennedy arrived at 1:12 p.m. Page- 1 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes- July 20, 1995 III Unscheduled Public Appearances - cont. Mr. Weinmann reviewed many of the articles that were handed out with their thrust being that A.A.R.P. seems more concerned with making money than representing the seniors. He quoted several ways that A.A.R.P. is wasting the taxpayers' money, i.e., 55 Alive Driving Program and promotion of their own products. Commissioner Brubaker Leaves Commissioner Brubaker left the meeting at 1:35 p.m. Commissioner Brubaker Returns Commissioner Brubaker returned at 1:40 p.m. Unscheduled Public Appearances - cont. Mr. Weinmann said that he was forming a steering committee(yet to be named) to get A.A.R.P. to do a better job of representing the seniors.. There seems to be a small self-serving body in charge of A.A.R.P. He asked for the Senior Advisory Commission's endorsement towards this goal. Councilwoman Spiro suggested this committee also target prospective A.A.R.P. members to inform them of A.A.R.P.'s problems. Chairman Chase asked whether this committee would be against A,A.R.P. completely or just for revamping. Mr. Weinmann stated the committee would be for revamping A.A.R.P. 411 Scheduled Public Appearances Councilwoman Spiro read and presented former Senior Advisory Commissioner, Flo Jennis, with a ten year service award plaque for her years on the Senior Advisory Commission. Mrs. Jennis stated it had been a great honor for her to serve on the Commission. City Council Liaison Report Councilwoman Spiro stated that budget hearings are being held and will be followed by a public hearing. If anyone has any budget concerns, see her before Tuesday. Communications Chairman Brubaker wrote a letter to Congresswoman Woolsey inviting her to the September Senior Advisory Commission meeting. Program Specialist Report Program Specialist, Wendy Audiss, updated the Commission on the following activities: pool tournaments with Santa Rosa and Petaluma senior centers, June spaghetti feed, Diabetes Intervention workshop, Windsor senior center visit, tour leader training seminar and a cruise that is being offered in conjunction with other senior centers. There will be the annual barbecue/no-money auction on August 12, and the vests for the EOC committee will be presented to public safety officer Jim Baker at the September Senior Advisory Commission meeting. • Page - 2 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes- July 20, 1995 • Program Specialist Audiss also reported that the program revenues for May were $5,253.26, rental revenues $1,379 and the attendance was 5,414. One hundred ninety two miles were put on the Sunshine van and 850 on the vans for trips. June revenues were $5,832.50, attendance 5,818 and 900 miles on the vans for trips and 188 miles on the Sunshine van. Senior Scheduler Report Senior Scheduler, Vicki Wilkerson, gave reports on the following: Tea Dance profits for 1994-95 were $5,816.43. Baking Committee donations for August 1995 through June 1995 were valued at $784.14. Discussion followed the Baking Committee's growth and how it now serves the entire Senior Center as opposed to just the drop-in center portion of the building. General Plan Councilwoman Spiro stated she's looking for persons interested in serving on the General Plan Committee. Applications for those interested are available at City Hall. Matters from Commissioners None Bob Weinmann Mr. Weinmann asked if the Senior Advisory Commission would note to endorse the A.A.R.P. steering committee he is forming to deal with the above discussed • concerns. Supervisor Hanlon advised that before the Senior Advisory Commission could take any action this had to be a properly agendized and noticed meeting. He suggested an emergency meeting be held instead of waiting for the next Senior Advisory Commission meeting in September. An emergency meeting to discuss and/or endorse Mr. Weinmann's group is scheduled for August 24, 1995, at 11 a.m. at the Rohnert Park Senior Center. Meeting Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one further desiring to be heard, Commissioner Kennedy made a motion for adjournment at 2:20 p.m. which was seconded by Commissioner Jurgiel and unanimously approved.
