1997/11/20 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes CITY OF ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES November 20, 1997 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 1:02 p.m. at the Senior Center, 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, Rohnert Park, with Vice Chair Kennedy presiding. Call to Order Vice Chair Kennedy called the regular session to order at approximately 1:02 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Present: (3) Commissioners Brubaker, Johnson, and Kennedy Absent: (2) Commissioners Chase and Jurgiel Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Recreation Supervisor, Mary Hanlon; Senior Scheduler, Vicki Wilkerson; and Councilmember, Linda Spiro. Approval of Minutes Commissioner Johnson noted that she had voted against the Weinmann proposal not for as noted in the September minutes. Commissioner Brubaker moved the corrected minutes of September 18th be approved. Commissioner Johnson seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved.. Acknowledging Posting of the Agenda Vice Chair Kennedy acknowledged that the Secretary/Supervisor had posted the Agenda as required by law in three (3) public locations within the time period required. Unscheduled Public Appearances Public Works Manager Bill Stephens introduced himself and reviewed Public Works services. Scheduled Public Appearances None City Council Liaison Report Councilmember Linda Spiro asked the Commission if they would like her to pursue installing speed bumps to the east of the Senior Center with the City Council. The Commission stated they would like to see them installed to slow down the speeding cars. • Page- 1 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes - November 20, 1997 She went on to explain what she meant by privatization of the Recreation Department as it was mentioned in an article in the newspaper. She said it can mean looking at the various departments in the city to see if services can be expedited and that she's not talking about replacing the employees, but rather the management and looking at ways to do things more efficiently. Commissioner Brubaker stated that when the seniors hear privatization that it scares them and requested that any future press releases use language that seniors can understand and that won't worry them. Commissioner Johnson asked about the proposed costs for a consultant to study the Recreation Department. Councilmember Spiro stated that the savings made after a study is done may outweigh the cost of the study and that the Council would simply like to take a look at the operations. Commissioner Kennedy asked why a decision to delay the hiring of a Recreation Director was made when it had been known for some time when Jim Pekkain was retiring. Councilmember Spiro said that an interim Recreation Director was on board and will stay until a decision was made. The City Council filled other positions first and that the Recreation Director position was not at the top of the list. Councilmember Spiro asked Supervisor Hanlon to confirm that Commissioner Chase was retiring from the Commission. • Communications None Program Specialist Report Senior Scheduler Wilkerson gave this report in Program Specialist Audiss' absence. The Variety Show had revenues of$1,596.55 and expenses of$174.31. The Bingo Party had revenues of$535.70. The last three dances had attendance of 309 and revenues of$746.08. The baking committee had $12 in donations and $51.27 in expenses. Upcoming events are the Thanksgiving dinner on November 25, the Holiday Party at the Senior Center on December 24 from 2-4 p.m. and the Holiday Dinner Dance on December 14. The holiday open house that has been hosted in the past by the Post Office has been cancelled by the Post Office due to their budget. The pool table has been recovered and the room repaneled. The work on the pool table was paid for by donations from the seniors. A light to be installed above the pool table is being donated by a senior. Matters from Commissioners Commissioner Brubaker announced the Council on Aging holiday luncheon will be held on December 17. 0 Recreation Supervisor Page - 2 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes - November 20, 1997 0 Report Recreation Supervisor Hanlon announced the Recreation Department's annual Arts and Crafts Faire will be November 29th and 30th, the Director of Recreation's retirement party on November 21st, and gave an update on the new Interim Recreation Director, Ron Mikalis. Meeting Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one further desiring to be heard, Commissioner Brubaker made a motion for adjournment at 1:45 p.m. which was seconded by Commissioner Johnson and unanimously approved.
