She went on to explain what she meant by privatization of the Recreation
Department as it was mentioned in an article in the newspaper. She said it can
mean looking at the various departments in the city to see if services can be
expedited and that she's not talking about replacing the employees, but rather the
management and looking at ways to do things more efficiently. Commissioner
Brubaker stated that when the seniors hear privatization that it scares them and
requested that any future press releases use language that seniors can understand
and that won't worry them.
Commissioner Johnson asked about the proposed costs for a consultant to study
the Recreation Department. Councilmember Spiro stated that the savings made
after a study is done may outweigh the cost of the study and that the Council
would simply like to take a look at the operations. Commissioner Kennedy asked
why a decision to delay the hiring of a Recreation Director was made when it had
been known for some time when Jim Pekkain was retiring. Councilmember Spiro
said that an interim Recreation Director was on board and will stay until a decision
was made. The City Council filled other positions first and that the Recreation
Director position was not at the top of the list.
Councilmember Spiro asked Supervisor Hanlon to confirm that Commissioner
Chase was retiring from the Commission.
