SUBJECT: Plain Clothes Operations
PURPOSE: To establish standard procedures for sworn personnel when conducting plain
clothes operations.
PROCEDURE
I. Wearing of a firearm
A. All personnel will adhere to Lexipol Policy 306.2.3 regarding the carrying of a
firearm while in plain clothes.
II. Soft Body Armor
A. All personnel will adhere to Lexipol Policy 1012.3.1 regarding soft body
armor.
III. Soft Body Armor Carrier (External)
A. Whenever a sworn officer of this department is participating in plain clothes
operations, they will have soft body armor concealed or in an approved
EXTERNAL carrier readily available for use.
B. Black External Carrier
1. The EXTERNAL carrier will have the word “POLICE” clearly visible
to the front, and the word “POLICE” clearly visible to the rear.
C. Blue Patrol Vest EXTERNAL carrier
1. Only approved if being worn UNDER an article of clothing that
clearly identifies the office with the word “POLICE” to the front and
the word “POLICE” to the rear.
IV. Identification
A. In the event an officer must identify themselves as a police officer to take
enforcement action, they will have their department issued badge readily
visible, AND;
B. The officer will announce their affiliation, AND;
C. Have the outer most article of clothing or EXTERNAL vest with the words
“POLICE” visible to the front and “POLICE” visible to the back of the
officer.
Nothing in this SOP shall take away discretion during an emergency situation or at the direction
of the Director of Public Safety.
