SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION AND FRIENDS OF THE ROHNERT
PARK SENIOR CENTER JOINT SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, May 26, 2022 12:30 p.m.
The Senior Citizen Advisory Commission and Friends of the Rohnert Park Senior Center of the City
of Rohnert Park met this date at the Rohnert Park Senior Center for a regular meeting to commence at
12:30pm.
1. SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION—CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair Pekkain called the meeting to order at 12:31pm.

2. PUBLIC COMMENTS
None.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES—Approval of minutes for the regular Senior Citizens Advisory
Commission and Friends of the Rohnert Park Senior Center Joint Meeting of January 20, 2022.
Moved/Second (Coffman/Transue)to approve meeting minutes for the regular meeting of January
20, 2022. The motion was carried with the following 4-0-0-0 vote. AYES: Pekkain, Coffman,
Transue, Kibwaa. NOS: None; ABSTAINS: None; ABSENT: None
4. MEETING ATTENDANCE
a. Commission Meeting Attendance
Chair Pekkain shared it is important for all commissioners to attend meetings in order for the
commission to be effective.
b. Discussion/Recommendation
Vice-Chair Coffman asked what the attendance policy is for the commission. Community
Services Supervisor, Foley will put this as an agenda item for the July meeting.

5. SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMISSION MISSON
a. Review purpose of Senior Citizen Advisory Commission
Chair Pekkain suggested combing the Senior Advisory Commission with the Parks and
Recreation Commission due to low meeting attendance and lack of topics to discuss.
b. Discussion/Recommendation
Community Services Director, Bagley reported it would be a City Council decision to disband
the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission. Bagley brought up the idea of moving the Senior
Citizen Advisory Commission meetings to City Hall so it could be broadcast live and
residents would be able to watch it at a later time. Bagley shared the Senior Advisory
Commission is a valuable commission to have. Councilmember Stafford shared it is important
to have senior representation. Commissioner Transue suggested talking to local senior
communities about senior issues and meeting seniors where they are. Community Services
Director Bagley suggested hosting a commission meeting at the Altamont so long as they
would be willing to publicly notice the meeting. The commission discussed having meetings
more frequently than four times a year. Councilmember Stafford suggested keeping the
meetings quarterly and hosting special meetings at senior living communities. Community
Services Supervisor Foley will agenized special meetings at alternate locations on for the July
meeting.
6. SENIOR BOCCE LEAGUE
a. Idea of Forming a Senior Bocce League
Chair Pekkain shared his interested in starting a senior bocce ball league.
b. Discussion/Recommendation
Community Services Director, Bagley shared there are bocce courts at Five Creek Park
however they are designed for recreational use, not league use. Bagley recommended letting
the Parks and Recreation Master Plan work itself out in regards to funding sources and seeing
if a senior bocce league is something the community would want. Community Services
Supervisor Foley will put a survey to seniors to see if they would be interested in a senior
bocce ball league.
7. COMISSIONERS GATHERING FEEDBACK FROM SENIOR CENTER
a. Idea of Visiting Senior Center
Chair Pekkain requested all commissioners visit the Senior Center at least once before the July
meeting. Chair Pekkain shared he would like commissioners to talk to seniors at the center to get
feedback from them about what they would like to see at the Senior Center.
b. Discussion/Recommendation
Vice-Chair Coffman shared he is at the Senior Center multiple times per week. The remaining
commissioners agreed it was a good idea to visit the Senior Center.
8. FRIENDS OF THE ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CENTER BYLAW AMENDMENT
a. Proposal of amending Article 4, Section 1
Community Services Supervisor, Foley presented the proposed amendment to Article 4, Section 1
of the Friends of the Rohnert Park Senior Center Bylaws.
b. Discussion/Recommendation
Moved/Second(Transue/Coffman)to approve the proposed amendment of changing Article 4,
Section 1 of the Friends of the Rohnert Park Senior Center Bylaws. The motion was carried
with the following 4-0-0-0 vote. AYES: Pekkain, Coffman, Transue, Kibwaa. NOS: None;

9. SENIOR CENTER REPORT CAL IFO RNl'
a. Community Services Supervisor
i. Senior Center Programs Update
Community Services Supervisor, Foley reported the Senior Prom had over 50 seniors
in attendance. Foley shared the Senior Center hosted a Mother's Day celebration that
included a mother's day mural where everyone was invited to bring in pictures of
mother figures. Foley shared over 40 people attended the celebration. Foley
announced a new Food Smarts class that will be coming to the Senior Center in June.
Foley also shared that monthly health seminars will begin in June with a local nurse.
Foley reported the Santa Rosa Junior College Older Adults Program classes will
return to the Senior Center on August 15.
ii. Council on Aging Update
Community Services Supervisor, Foley reported Council on Aging continues to have
congregate dining on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They serve an average of 15 people
per day. Foley reported Council on Aging continues to do the weekly frozen meal
pack pick up where they serve between 30-35 people each week.
iii. Bingo Update
Community Services Supervisor, Foley reported since the last meeting in January,
Bingo has brought in $17,373.53. The game averages 70 players each week. Foley
reported the Senior Center has purchased a new billiards table and a new printer using
Bingo funds.
10.CITY COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT
Councilmember Stafford reported there will be a new councilmember appointed to fill Vice-Mayor
Willy Linares spot and that the term will last until November 2022. Councilmember Stafford reported
the Southwest roundabout has opened. Councilmember Stafford reported the City purchased the State
Farm site and that there will be a special meeting held that will discuss how to move forward with the
property. Chair Pekkain asked if we will have a new commissioner appointed by the new City
Councilmember. Community Services Director Bagley reported staff reached out to the Clerk's office
who confirmed a commissioner will be appointed soon.
11.PARKS AND RECREATION LIAISON REPORT
Parks and Recreation Liaison, Borr reported the commission is looking forward to working on the
Master Plan. Borr reported the Wine Country games will be taking place at Sunrise Park on the
weekend of June 10.
12.COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR REPORT
a. Building/Project Update
Director of Community Services, Bagley reported the City is heading in to a new fiscal year
July 1. Bagley reported six temporary courts will be turned in to permanent pickleball courts.
Bagley shared upcoming projects include renovating the Community Center and resurfacing
the cardio room floor at the Callinan Sports and Fitness Center. Bagley shared Magnolia pool
went out to bid, however no contractors put out offers. Community Services Supervisor, Foley
provided an update about crosswalk that connects the Altamont Apartments to the Senior
Center. Foley reported she met with the City's Public Works department where it was
discovered that the majority of the crosswalk is the Altamont's property so therefore the City
is unable to touch it since it is private property. Foley has reached out to the Altamont letting
them know about the concerns seniors have shared about the safety issues surrounding the
uneven crosswalk. Bagley gave an update about Measure M and shared that all community
events are funded through Measure M.

Community Services Director, Bagley reported 200 players are signed up to play in the Wine
Country games. Bagley announced Party on the Plaza will start June 3 and shared on June 10th
they will have a tribute to Founder's Day. Bagley reported the Summer Brunch & BBQ event
was well received by the community. Bagley announced Community Services will be hosting
a 461 of July event called RP Jubilee that will take place at the Community Center on July 4
from 12-4pm.

There being no further business, Chair Pekkain adjourned the regular joint meeting of the Senior
Advisory Commission and Friends of the Rohnert Park Senior Center at 1:53pm.
