SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, March 2, 2023 10:00am
The Senior Citizen Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date at the Rohnert
Park Senior Center for a regular meeting to commence at 10:00am.
1. SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION—CALL To ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair Pekkain called the meeting to order at 10:00am.
Present: Jim Pekkain, Chair
Gary Coffman, Vice-Chair
Phyllis Transue, Commissioner
Alice Kibwaa, Commissioner
Debby Mentz, Commissioner
Absent: None
Staff Present: Cindy Bagley, Director of Community Services
Amanda Foley, Community Services Supervisor
2. PUBLIC COMMENTS
None.
3. DISCUSSION REGARDING IDEAS ON HOW TO SPEND ALLOCATED MONEY
DESIGNATED FOR SENIOR SERVICES FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE ROHNERT
PARK SENIOR CENTER FRIDAY NIGHT BINGO GAME
a. Update regarding Friends of the Rohnert Park Senior Center Friday Night Bingo Game funds
Director of Community Services, Bagley provided an update on this item. Bagley informed the
commission that they will no longer be serving as the board of Directors for the Friends of the
Rohnert Park Senior Center Friday Night Bingo Game. Bagley shared with the commission that the
Friday night bingo game is being audited and is on pause until further notice. Bagley reported staff
recommends funding Senior Center excursions, special events, and keeping $10,000 for
maintenance.
b. Public Comment
None.
c. Discussion/Recommendation
Moved/Second (Coffman/Transue) to appropriate $25,000 from the Bingo fund balance. $15,000
to be split between special events, and excursions, and $10,000 for maintenance. Motion passed
with the following 5-0-0-0 vote. AYES: Pekkain, Coffman, Transue. Kibwaa, Mentz. NOS:
None; ABSTAINS: None; ABSENT: None
The Commission also requested staff to look in to the cost of replacing lobby couches, blinds
for drop-in room, as well as cost of painting door trims.

4. DISCUSSION REGARDING IDEAS ON HOW TO SPEND $100,000 DONATION TO
ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CENTER
a. Update on donation gifted to Rohnert Park Senior Center
Director of Community Services, Bagley reported that a$100,000 donation was gifted to the Senior
Center from a trust of a person who passed away. Bagley reported it was noted in the trust that the
$100,000 is to be used to feed seniors.
b. Public Comment
None.
c. Discussion/Recommendation
Commissioner Transue asked if Council on Aging could benefit from donation. Bagley reported
the money could be used to make Council on Aging whole. Commissioner Transue recommends
using the donation to offset the cost recovery for Council on Aging and to evaluate the program
each year to supplement what they aren't receiving. All commissioners were in favor. The
commission was also in agreement that the donation funds could be used to host a quarterly
luncheon event at the senior center. Vice-Chair Coffman recommended changing the Senior Center
coffee bar from donation based to free coffee, with donations welcomed. All commissioners were
in favor.
5. AGENDA TOPICS FOR SPECIAL MEETING AT COGIR SENIOR LIVING
a. Discussion/Recommendation
The commission discussed and agreed upon agenda topics for the upcoming Special meeting.
6. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, Chair Pekkain adjourned the special meeting of the Senior
Advisory Commission at 11:04am.
