AB26Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Training Bulletin AB 26 Topic: AB 26 Summary: Assembly Bill 26 created 4 additional points that all California Law Enforcement agencies must have within their policies On January 1, 2021, California Senate Bill 230 went into effect, creating Government Code Section 7286. GV 7286 created 20 points that agencies were required to have in their policy related to use of force. As an addition to the new law, on September 30, 2021, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 26 into law. AB 26 amended Government Code Section 7286 and went into effect on January 1, 2022 The new bill created four additionla points that all agencies in California must have in their policies: Added the word "immediately" to the requirement to report excessive force Prohibited retaliation against officers who report violations of the law or regulations. Prohibited officers from serving as trainers for three years if an "abuse of force" complaint is substantiated. Required that officers who fail to intervene be disciplined in the same manner as the officer that committeed the excessive force These additions have been added to our policy
