Summary: AB 89, signed September 30, 2021, added two Government Codes into law related to education to Peace Officers prior to employement (effective January 1, 2022)
Government Code Section 1031.4:
Raises qualifying age of peace officers to 21 years old.
Government Code Section 13511.1:
Requires the Chancellor of the California Community Colleges to submit a report on recommendations to the legislature for creating a modern police degree program by June 1, 2023.
Part of the recommendation will include how to incorporate the policing degree program or a bachelor's degree of any discipline into the minimum education requirements for employement as a peace officer.
Within two years of submission of the report. POST shall approve and adopt the education criteria.
