SOP-13 Narcotic Training Supplies-RevisedPolice Services Division SOP-13 Revised: April 26, 2021 SUBJECT: Narcotic Training Supplies PURPOSE AND SCOPE: To provide narcotics for canine training, while maintaining the security and integrity of the narcotics. Narcotics training supplies will be maintained for the Department of Public Safety using the Canine Training Box case # 09-3712. PROCEDURE: A. Within 60 days of a narcotics destruction or yearly, a full list of all narcotics for destruction shall be provided to the Canine Sergeant and Narcotics Detection Canine Handler(s) for their review. The Canine Sergeant and/or Canine Handler(s) shall advise the Property Officer of all items they would like to view for possible department retention. At an agreed upon time all requested items will be reviewed and sorted for department retention. B. The items for retention will be weighed, packaged and rebooked under the appropriate case number as listed above. C. A supplement will be written under the appropriate training case number listed above. A new item number is created for each item and it will cross-reference the original case and item numbers for complete chain of custody D. Those items deemed for retention shall have the notation “Retained for Department Use” added to the appropriate item number in the Property/Evidence electronic database. 1. A Canine Training Box (Case 09-3712) will be kept with the Canine Handler(s) upon approval by the Canine Sergeant. a. The Canine Training Box will contain small amounts of narcotics for ongoing training purposes and will be secured by the Canine Handler(s) at all times. i. The Canine Training Box will be audited on a monthly basis by the Canine Sergeant or on duty Sergeant to ensure all assigned narcotics are secure and accounted for. This audit will be documented as a supplement to the Canine Training Box case report 09-3712. E. When retained narcotics are no longer required or are no longer of value for training, they shall be submitted to Property/Evidence for destruction.
